Published premiums, never estimates
What does pet insurance cost for your breed?
Pick a breed, a state and an age: every figure below is one that an insurer, a licensed marketplace or NAPHIA has published, with its date.
Separate published figures, not a quote: each measures something different and they are never combined.

Break-even: premiums against a vet bill
The premium starts at the breed figure above; change any term. The math is the claim arithmetic of a reimbursement policy, not an offer from any insurer.
How the figures work
Breed. The lead figure is Pawlicy Advisor's median of real customer quotes for the breed (82 dog and 18 cat breeds, updated October 15, 2026). Where Forbes Advisor, Fetch or Insurify also publish the breed, the breed page lists their figures too, each with its own terms and date. State. Insurify publishes dog and cat medians for every state and DC (Rates current as of May 31, 2026); Pawlicy publishes an all-pet median. Age. Insurify's medians for young, adult and senior pets. National. NAPHIA's 2025 average accident-and-illness premium: $836 a year for dogs and $435 for cats.
No source publishes a premium for a given breed at a given age in a given state, and multiplying separate averages together would invent one, so this site does not. The four numbers sit side by side to show the range a real quote is likely to fall in, and the breed and state pages explain what each source measured. An actual price comes only from a licensed insurer or agent.
Break-even. A reimbursement policy pays (bill − deductible) × reimbursement share, up to the annual limit. Twelve months of premiums plus the owner's share of the bill is the insured cost of the year; the uninsured cost is the bill. They are equal when the covered bills reach the deductible plus the year's premiums divided by the reimbursement share. At NAPHIA's dog average of $69.67 a month with a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement, that is $1,295; for the cat average it is $794. Vet bills in the list are averages insurers publish from their claims: Trupanion's claim averages and the conditions ACVS links to each breed.
NAPHIA's average dog premium rose from $625 in 2021 to $836 in 2025, and the cat average from $370 to $435. Only 4.27% of US pets were insured.
